ST24 2.5V6 upgrades:

- SVT/ST200 PARTS:

parts which ford upgrade on the ST200 which you can add to a normal 2.5V6 duratec are upper and lower inlet manifolds, throttle body, lighter flywheel, airbox/intake, twin exhaust system, cams. best to have a chip if you fit the SVT/ST200 manifolds and TB to get the most out of the mods and so the car doesnt run too lean.

The ST200 parts can be had for cheap-ish on ebay or from a scrap-yard but they are quite rare - so alot of people opt to buy the SVT items from america because they are the same as the ST200 bits and cost alot less than buying from the UK.

INJECTORS:
19lb (green) injectors will support 225-240 WHP (these come as standard on ST200)

CHIPS:
Superchip (Bluefin www.superchips.co.uk ) and Unichip ( www.dastek.co.uk ) seem to be the most commonly used for the V6. Power gain depends on what other modifications have been done on the car. Superchip is a plug-in chip (approx cost 350. unichip needs to be set up on a rolling road and is wired into the loom and costs approx 410 including the rolling road setup. Unichip is set up to the individual car and its modifications and can be re-mapped in the future if you add other mods.

INDUCTION:
Alot of people say the ST200 airbox/induction system with a free-er flowing panel filter is excellent, but if you want a cone-filter/induction kit there is several available.
K&N 57i kit from www.filterpower.co.uk
Pipercross
Blitz
Viper
www.ctamotorsports.com (USA)

EXHAUST:
Various systems available such as www.powerflow.co.uk, longlife and mongoose. Powerflow and longlife are stainless steel custom made to your car and you can choose the exit type, number of exits, how loud the system will be etc. Both have lifetime warranty. Decatting will give a nice power gain but give you problems when it comes to MOT.

HEADERS/PERFORMANCE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS:
this kit is available from USA www.msdsinc.com

MAF:
Pro-flow MAF available from USA - can be bought exactly calibrated to larger injectors. upgraded MAF isnt really needed without forced induction.

SHORT SHIFTER:
available from www.cosmoracing.com

UNDER DRIVE PULLEYS:
dont use these if you have a big ice install!

HEADWORK/BIGGER VALVES:

NITROUS:
A few people have run wet nitrous systems on the V6 without any problems using 50bhp and 75bhp jets. various systems available from wizards of nos, cold fusion, NOS etc.
Best to have a custom chip if you have NOS so the engine doesnt run too lean.

SUPERCHARGER:
Vortech do a kit from USA which apparently is fairly simple and takes approx 8 - 10 hours to fit. cost is approx 1700 plus shipping and import duty. Ideally a quaiffe LSD and uprated clutch is needed. Van Aaken Developments in Bracknell, UK will supply and fit the supercharger kit for you and the other ancillary upgrades.

ST220 UPGRADES:
K&N now make the 57i kit for the ST220.
However, we saw a ST220 fitted with a large diameter cone filter from an escort cosworth (with custom made trumpet and cold air feeds) produced 10bhp extra over other ST220's on the same rolling road day.
Bluefin superchip is also available for the ST220.

Other than this, not many poeple have yet tuned the ST220 with it being a relatively new model.

What in your opinion would be the best first step to increase BHP on a budget?

Replacement filter, induction filter, exhaust etc?

The car is a 1999 ST24 2.5V6.

Cheers.

Hi Cleo,

I fitted a K&N and an exhaust from Longlife Exhausts to my '98 ST24.

I used a Gtech performance meter before and after the change and increased BHP from 165 to 181. The best bit about it is the sound
from the twin pipes at low speed around town

go for a set of drilled/grooved disks and uprated pads (black diamond, predator etc) you can get them from www.motorsportworld.co.uk - dont get EBC they wear out in no time at all

also you might be able to get goodridge braided hoses for it.

or go the whole hog and get a set of brembo or AP racing calipers and big disks - but expect to pay about ?1200 - ?1500. but you would get good money for selling your ST220 calipers etc.

unichip or bluefin, you wont get much gain without other mods cos the car is normally aspirated. if you insure with HIC there is no extra cost for Mods but you have to declare them.

In my humble opinion first step in ST220 tuning is an installation of "thinblade" throttle body. In my car that increases theoretical diameter of butterfly from 60mm to 64,4 mm and causes about 14 HP increase (of course measured on the dyno). AFR is still proper as increased airflow will be compensated with more fuel due to higher readouts from airflow meter.

Such throttle body cannot be installed to ST200 or 2.5V6 engines, due to some reasons.

Next step can be replacement of the exhaust manifolds with complete 3-1 x 2 manifolds with metal catalytic converters. Another 15 powerhorses and no troubles with exhaust gases or exhaust noise...

Please have a look at the dyno printouts for my car:

Group of lines at the top of graph are torque lines (with Nm, sorry), middle - power lines and bottom - power loss at front wheels.

Pink lines (TEST4, 227,3 HP 273 Nm) are factory results (measured in 2005, when I have bought my ST).

Then, blue lines (TEST3 234 HP, 274 Nm) - I have found how to overprogram my ECU trough Motorola PowerPC BDM port inside ECU and I have increased (advanced) ignition by 3-4,5 and increased dueling by 0,5 AFR (ca. 3,5%) for full throttle (WOT) only.

After that (green lines, 241 HP, 280 Nm) - I have replaced my throttle body with thinblade and starting from 4500 rpm I have gained a nice power and torque increase. I have found, that power still arises up to rpm limit at 6700 so I started to search where is rpm limit coded in ECU.

Finally (red lines, TEST1) i have replaced both manifolds with self-developed manifolds and with 2 x metal catalytic converters (used typically in races, where obligatory). I have changed also rpm limit to 7000. After that I have 258 HP and 288 Nm.

This is maybe nothing special, but shows my way for power increase in ST220.

PS: Air intake is factory. Filter is K&N (factory filter replacement).

These gtech thingys any good?, by that i mean do they give accurate results for bhp & torque? Me thinks there very cool but seems almost to good to true? Would be really good for monitoring your performance without the expence and in my case finding the time to get down for the odd dyno.

Refering to the post below:

Where did you get your 3-1 manifolds and larger intake? I can not find these anywhere?

Are there any other restrictions in the inlet? (smaller than 64mm?)

Is that a joke?

The thinblade throttle body wont add a carrot.

i recently fitted a part i got cheap off e-bay called a [ e-tech cb 25 ] for £15.99 ... i think it's known as a power boost valve but not over sure ... it fits on a tributary hose off my air filter to block past the mas flow meter... since i've fitted the part it has a noticable increased the acceleration and performance so i'm well chuffed... it said on the leaflet that it give a clean burn by creating turbulance in the intake and gives better throttle responce and fuel economy ...which it does that brilantly but not sure bout the ecomomy yet... a fantastic cheap mod and 15 minutes of tinkering
