Think we can thank the likes of Facebook for the decline in forums. Instant msgs etc allow quicker responses and unlike days of gone where we’d all advise, feedback etc regarding any and all work we tried or collaborated on.

I’m still a big fan of this, Talk Ford and other forums, a last some people still use.

Yes I think you're right Ben facebook has really taken off for me. I first joined about 7 years ago and eventually found it a pain. But I re activated my account earlier this year and found it more user friendly. I'm now in several groups of interest to me and it's great. I've met and made contact with a great many people I knew in the RAF and the years have just rolled away! I'm also a member of one or two Forums, like this one the activity has dropped off but we still keep going! The main thing is at least we are communicating and that's what counts.

While I have no intention of doing more tuning on my Beemer I still have an interest in all tuning. I still have a look at Fast Ford and Performance Ford now and again and other magazines. Likewise I look on the tuning websites too.I'm a bit too old now to be a boy racer although just now and again I still give it the beans!  :}  :}  :}  :driving:

You're never too old to be a boy racer Peter, although you may now have to call yourself an 'ole boy racer'!  :}  :L  :}

More like a bloody "old codger" racer Ross!  I think somewhere along the line I must have blinked and lost a few years. I can't believe I'll be (and I'm ashamed to admit it) 79 in 4 weeks time and still reading tuning mags FFS!    :driving:

Mind you I do leave the porn mags on the top shelf---don't see much need for 'em anymore! :}  :}

Drumdude, Had a look at a 12 plate C63 Estate in Farnham last weekend.
I give the dealer top marks for the photography, it looked a million dollars.
In reality it was a abused shopping car.... every panel had scratches or damage to it along with a nice key mark on the bonnet and a scuff mark on the nearside front bumper.
3 of the wheels were kerbed and lacquer peeling off.. and the seat boltster was shredded.
I didn’t hang around to test drive as I’m after a cherished example and this was clearly not.
I did take multiple photos but as usual the forum won’t let me upload as they exceed the limit (fcuking waste of time)

Anyway if you come across a facelift C63 Wagon in silver or grey give me a shout.

The pictures look good on that site but the car seems to have done some miles for its age. Also, for 25k you’d think they’d polish out the scratches? Am surprised at the seat bolster damage? I’d expect the passenger side front alloy to be damaged but not 3 of them. Also mate, opt for the 19” multi-spoke rims...car looks much better on 19s.

Are you able to stretch a little further and get one from a Merc dealer? Should be quite a few 14, 64 and 15 plates knocking about with the decent Merc 2 year warranty. Believe it or not, but I got mine on 0% Finance with 2 year warranty and 2 free services, a minor and a major. Used the last service a few months back. Merc sometimes do 0% weekends so it’s best to keep your eye on the Mercedes Benz Retail website. I was going to buy mine outright, but got a better deal on the 0% offer BUT slapped down the minimum 40% deposit. Worked out quite well. Money sits in the bank earning next to nothing but then again, it was a much less dividend to draw on so I saved on tax when self assessment day arrived.

Also mate, beware of what you’re buying when it comes to spec. Mine is the base model C63 so no performance pack or Performance pack plus. Although nice to have, you will face huge bills for items like brakes...think its near 800 quid for a set of front brake discs. Yet mine are normal grooved and drilled steels at less than 200 quid a pair. Also, anything with the AMG LSD is pricey on the regular fluid changes required. Many with the non-LSD C63 (like mine) get the Quaife LSD fitted for £1200 or so. Also, there is the Eurocharge remap which can get the base model from 450bhp up to a near 500bhp, just like the PP and PPP versions. MSL are the top tuners for all of that. Bear in mind that the base C63 is somewhat purposely held back engine power wise because of the PP and PPP options, hence why a tune gets big gains. However, mine at 450bhp with no LSD is fine. Yes it’s easy to lose traction on pull off but 450bhp on a RWD is going to see that sort of thing happen.

Couple of things to watch out for, the MCT 7 speed gearbox can be a bit fruity, especially in comfort mode where a delayed response will see the car suddenly leap forward, Merc applied a “patch” to mine which has calmed that down. Also, they are renowned for having a shat DAB radio. Works a treat in Germany but awful in the UK. Again, they applied a patch to my radio but it’s still bad...sod it. A lot of those C63s are former lease cars, so don’t expect to find fully loaded versions with Distronic etc...although the Multimedia pack on mine is great but am not sure if that’s standard.

Bear in mind mate that they drink gas like there is no tomorrow. The 66 litre tank can give you the impression that it does well, especially like me coming from the smaller tank in the old ST220.

Finally, if you do get one, get on the MB Service Plan for your servicing...will save you a packet as opposed to just rocking up and booking it in.

All in all, it’s a great car and very hard to resist driving it all the time. lol

And just to add, if the car is left standing for a week or so, the engine can sometimes make a ticking sound when first started up from cold. Mine has done it a few times and it sounds like a valve ticking but goes away when the engine warms up. On further investigation, the tick sound is quite common with regards to other folk reporting it on other forums and I even heard it on a black series C63 in a Shmee vid on You Tube.

Just letting you know in the event you go and see one which has been stood still for a few weeks. They can also have a clattery start-up sound too, lasts for like half a second. Most of the time you get a nice “vroom” start up sound but times it can be mixed with a top end clatter. Again, all this is mentioned all over the net and does appear to the characteristics of that AMG engine’s top end.

On a cold start, the exhaust note should be loud with an in your face V8 burble on idle. Then the exhaust valves adjust after 20 seconds and it gets quieter. When driving in Comfort mode, you get that V8 burble especially on pull off because it’s always in the lower gears, like 2nd for pull off. The cracks and pops happen in Sports+ when booting it. The standard exhaust note is way above its BMW and Audi competition.

Thanks for the very detailed reply, I do appreciate it.

I never thought of searching Mercedes Benz dealers as imagined they'd be overpriced etc, but if I can get the 2 year warranty that would offer piece of mind and the 0% offers would definitely interest me as I could cover the 40-50% deposit.

PP (Performance Pack) PPP (Performance Pack Plus) thanks for explaining the differences, I wouldn't want the carbon ceramic brakes either but the LSD either factory fitted or Quaife would be on the list of toys.

This would be my daily runner driving approximately 45 miles a day on the M3 at off peak times and I'm currently getting 26-28 average on my 2.0 EcoBoost.

I have looked at other Marques as part of my mid-life crisis I even thought of keeping the MK5 and getting a MK2 RS Focus as a garage Queen. The price point of these has kinda put me off as much as I would like one (think I will wait until the bubble burst on the MK3 and prices stabilize)

The 5.0 Mustang was also on the list but this would also involve chopping in the MK5 estate and I love the practicality of the estate which I would lose with the small boot of the Mustang.

The C63 ticks a lot of boxes and will give me the V8 I always wanted.. thanks for your help.

Awesome motor Mal that's for sure but a daily runner? I think you would soon regret that mate. where on earth would you use that performance in the daily grind! I can't use all I've got under the bonnet which is a lot less than the Merc but it's certainly much cheaper to run!

Oh well I suppose you pay's your money etc etc.

BTW I'm having a old life crisis!  :}  :}  :}  :}  :L  :driving:

You don't have to boot it to get the performance out of it. Even under normal driving it can shift within the law and still put a grin on one's face, even the noise under normal driving is a delight. For motorway driving, the best I've seen mpg-wise was 27 mpg when cruising at 70mph. However, you really have to think "smiles per gallon" as opposed to "miles per gallon".

TBH Mal, I wouldn't worry about the LSD. I've spoke to many C63 owners who have told me to go for an LSD if I ever intend to trackday the car. If not, then the electronics are just fine. They're 3 modes of ESP: Sensible, you're a bit of a nutter and you want to die. I stick to "sensible" and have had no issues. The unexpected back end slides in my old RWD Sierra's just don't happen in this car. However, the AMG LSD does require servicing, so bear that in mind. The Quaife is an install and forget unit.

I believe the way you can tell the pricey brakes is if the car has red calipers. The silver calipers are the normal brakes. Both red and silver are Brembo calipers.

The "expensive to run" stuff is a bit of a myth. Lots of folk say the C63 eats rear tyres, which is true if you do burnouts. Yes the fuel is the expense, but at the end of the day its a naturally aspirated V8 6.2 litre...so very little to go wrong. In fact, this car is cheaper to run than my ST220. That thing ate front tyres, pads and discs like there was no tomorrow? Not to mention the rip off Ford servicing costs and p1ss poor customer service.

If you get a C63, there is one thing I can guarantee you mate: you'll be looking for excuses to drive in Germany...lol. I've gone over there a few times. First time was part of my road-trip to Rome. Got new tyres all around plus tracking etc. Hit the Autoroutes in France (I have the toll tag on the window) and then into Germany. Opened her up on the unrestricted sections (still lots of them and the gantries show what looks like our national speed limit sign) and I hit the 155mph limiter many times. People just move out your way - it was fcuking awesome. They also have that 102 RON guzzle-line over there and you're looking at 140 euros for a tank but the car will fcuking fly, pop and crack lol haha!

As a guide mate, I paid £36k for mine. That was a C63 Coupe, 63 Plate with 10k miles on the clock. It was just over 2 years old when I got it. Since then, I've put near 30k on the clock LOL! 2 x Le Mans 24, Rome and then Monaco this year. Last service reported that my discs and pads were "good condition", I was half expecting a bill for them?

Since my purchase I have bought 6 tyres. The first set of 4 were Conti SP 5s just before the Rome roadtrip. Cost was just shy of £650 for the 4 which included front and rear tracking. About 6 months back, I got a nail in one of the rear Contis...a big one. Tyre place said the rears were on the legal limit so swapped them out for Mich Pilot Super Sports so get much more grip. Fronts were still ok. After that, I did the Le Mans 24hr camping trip in her then down to Monaco and back to the UK. Again, last service said the front and rear tyres were in good condition.

And finally, if you get one from Merc, and it's less than 3 years old, you can get the Sat Nav maps updated for free - not a lot of folk know that, it's a £150 bill if you don't. Mine came with TomTom HD traffic so there is a SIM card in the unit. First 3 years is free and mine expired a few months ago. Cost to extend the subscription by another 3 years was £80...and it works very well too. Also, every time  you service with Merc, you get 12 months Merc UK and Euro roadside recovery for 12 months.

I'll shut up now LOL
