Hello everyone.
I have just purchased a 2005 st220 with 100k on the clock and I have noticed when accelerating in 1st 2nd 3rd I get a whining noise and a kind of whar whar whar like a distorted tyre that gets worse the more you lean on the gas . Wheel bearings seem fine I have small amount of play where the offside shaft enters the diff. Has anybody had this problem? Many thanks

I have a few suggestions for you mate. I had a few wines on mine. First off, I had a whine while playing music using the AUX port, cant stop this one. Also, I had a whine through the idler pulley, also worth checking the tensioner, and also, through the rear wheel bearings (though you believe these are ok)

Worth checking though, jack the car up, hold the shock and spin the wheel, you will feel a vibration through the shock if the bearing is on it's way out (atleast I did)

The tensioner and idler need the belt removing and turn them manually, you are feeling for free smooth movenment.

Dan

Thanks Dan that's given me a few things to look at. I have a broken spring on the nearside tho I wouldn't have thought that would cause it. But I'm changing it on the weekend. I took a trip to the Breakers yard to get another intermediate shaft and whilst there I found no mk3 Mondeos with and play in the long shaft where it enters the box also mine has signs of oil leaks around there. I'm hoping the play is from worn spline and not warm diff bearings .....

Hi lads,

I have just brought an ST220 and have exactly the same problem. My mate who is a very good technician reckons it is a bearing in the gearbox as he has heard something similar before.

Im looking at reconditioned gearboxes at the moment but if anyone has any knowledge that it could be something else I would much appreciate it.

Cheers

Charlie
