I have a 2009 Titanium X Sport Estate that has been displaying the Front Light Malfunction warning on the dash. When it does this the lights still work as they should. If I switch the car off then back on the warning goes away for a while but eventually comes back again.

Any ideas what's causing this and what needs to be done to stop the annoying warning keep coming back ?

I don't think mine has auto levelling as I have the halogen lights not the Xenon ones ?

Do you have adaptive lights then, maybe?

Yes they work fine, even when the warning comes up on the display the lights still work.

Sorry for the old post resurrection....

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this?

I've got the same happening on mine, but I do think its the auto levelling.

Any ideas on what I can check?

Thanks!

Mine has started doing this too. I have the self levelling xenon lights.

My previous 2008 MK4 Bi-Xenon model had the Headlight Malfunction error which was fixed whilst under warranty and took Inchape Guildford 4 days to fix, according to the work sheet it was a loose connection in the headlamp connector block.
No idea why it took 4 days

I've just purchased a 2009 with the HID lamps and I was getting the same message.
Turns out the garage steam cleaned the engine bay and got some moisture in the cluster.
I removed the cluster and put it in the airing cupboard for a few hours, problem solved and error message deleted.
I think the self leveller module was damp.
