Help my wife has filled our mondeo 2.2 tdci with unleaded and drove it for 1 mile until it stopped ,I have drained the tank changed the filter cleaned out all the injector pipes and rail refilled the tank with diesel suked the diesel through the filter and tried to start it ,
It started for a few seconds and then stopped have tried for hours to restart it still wont go
Had a code reader on it and the guy said that there is no reason why it should not start .

maybe air in the system, try loosening the injector pipes a bit and try again. You will start to get some seepage out of them then tighten up again.

I have tried that still cant get any diesel through the injectors ,had a modis tester on it and the fuel pressure is climbing up as i crank the engine but it will not fire if i give it a spray in the inlet the it starts but will not keep running

Pump is gone I'd say, never good with diesel engines with putting petrol in them

does the engine sound ok when it does start briefly?

Was the car empty when she filled it (so more or less a pure petrol mix?) Just wondering if internal damage has been done to the engine (petrol needing ignition and diesel needed compression)

yes it was empty the engine runs fine if you feed fuel into the induction pipe so it looks like the injcetors are not letting any fuel through

Did you replace the fuel filter and make sure it was full of new diesel?
First thing I would do is take the fuel filter off and top it up with diesel.
Seems you have a lot of air in the system so the diesel is not getting to the injectors.

we have a fuel drain van at work,if u have run it like u have said it has either air locked or no fuel getting through.fill your fuel filter with diesel and hopefully it should drag the rest through, make sure you have enough power in your battery and also dont crank it to much as there is a possibility that you could fook your starter motor. :L good luck sometimes they go first time or after a few attempts.

Not a good idea. Insurance fraud can get you into all sorts of trouble especially as they scout forums like these.

ok may seem a daft question and probably hasn't happened but have you connected the fuel filter correctly?

Also, if you remove all of your leak off pipes and turn it over do you get fuel leaking from the injectors? (it should just pool around the injectors)

Telegraph article "diesel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, injector pump will all require removal and clearing"
What a load of scaremongering tosh, "petrol removes case hardening" laughable.

We've had this conversation twice in the last week or so.
Lets watch this thread to see if this is the first case of petrol causing actual damage or wether Ford, once again, just have someone else's pants down by charging £7k to bleed the system (whilst fitting new pump, injectors, fuel lines etc)

Forever the cynic

No fuel out of the leak off pipes but there is fuel at the rail

when we go out to them with fuel contamination,if they have run them like u said we drain from the outlet on the fuel filter and then drag it all out of the fuel rail. when u drained the fuel out have u tried to take the feed pipe of the filter and then turn the ignition on,but make sure someone is with you, fuel should come out when the ignition is on.tis just a process of elimination.cheers malc.

Hi

Story seems to be that it is possible to produce a fuel pump perfectly able of pumping petrol for many miles. However, pumps used for pumping diesel, which allegedly has, higher lubricating qualities will break down immediately they are asked to pump a different liquid.

I just cannot get my head around that one. Perhaps there is a metallurgist on the site that can explain.

Exact same thing happened to our 2.2 a couple of weeks ago. Missus filled a nearly empty tank with petrol and drove a mile before it conked out. Fuel filter changed and system drained, towed to start it and it's been fine. Seems unlikely the pump would have gone in such a short time.

Good luck.
