Mondeo MK4 PSA Bluefin Install With Pictures

This is just an update to the previous MK3 Mondeo Bluefin install guide.

After carefully considering the options currently available for the MK4 Mondeo I decided on the Bluefin remapping product for the following reasons.

I needed a product that can be easily removed by myself via handset prior to any servicing being carried out under warranty by Ford.

After having the Bluefin system on my previous ST TDCi for 42000k miles without any problems this was also a very big consideration.

The added advantage of having a DTC code reader and for all 06 Bluefin type handsets a new CANBUS DATA Logging application which should come in handy for monitoring future modifications.

Anyway onto to the installation..

I ordered my Bluefin yesterday (£391) and received it today via Citylink couriers.

The diagnostic port is located on the drivers side under the pull down compartment.

I plugged in the handset and started the procedure for remapping the car following the instructions on the graphic display.

At the end of the procedure the handset prompted me to "Install the CD Program"

I then went onto my PC and loaded the Bluefin Desktop software and carried out the registration information then plugged in the handset and clicked on "connect to superchips server" at that point the handset started to communicate with superchips and proceeded to download a file onto the handset.

I then had the message " Your Bluefin unit has been updated and is ready to program to your vehicle"

At that point I disconnected from the PC and carried out the install Bluefin command and followed the handset instructions.

During the installation I would advise not touching any of the cars controls other than the on/off ignition switch when prompted to do so.

On my installation I had 2 error messages appear on the GUI screen which cleared after the program had finished updating my vehicle.

My first impressions were WOW..! the responsiveness was very noticeable and the boost surge was definitely extended over the standard mapping.

LOL

After all that effort (excellent write up by the way)

The only thing you put about the result was:

"My first impressions were WOW..! the responsiveness was very noticeable and the boost surge was definitely extended over the standard mapping".

:loopy:

Com'on Malford, we want more!

Does it break your back?

Has the fuel economy altered in any way?

Does this engine have a better 1st & 2nd gear?

Do you now have the only Real ford diesel that can take on the might of the ST220? (I know I'm going to pay for that one :naughty:)

... or you not able to tell yet as your still running it in?...
With nearly 10k on the odometer it should start to get loose, anyhow it is fit to get the hell out of it.

Regarding the "go"
On a GPS the new struggles to get the 218 km/h in standard guise, so in std form not quicker than the old 2.2.
Same for acceleration, the new has quite a few kg to haul.

The difference is how it is unfolded.
The Mk4 is less "direct" more refined.
I have a rep Mk4 after several Mk3, I always find it a nice to have a go with my wife's Mk3
This is of course my own opinion.

Nice to know you haven't lost the spirit Mal

I had a MK4 175HP TDCI up my backside a few weeks back, he wasn't as quick as he thought pulling out of a roundabout and up a hill!
I suppose we both had about the same BHP but as you say he has more weight to haul which seemed to give me the edge. Think I will stick with the MK3 for now. I prefer the look anyway LOL!

Its running great and over a period of time I have got used to the extra power and its only when you revert back to standard that you see the difference between standard and mapped.

I've taken the car back to Fords for several warranty jobs and every time I remove the Bluefin the car does feel flat and loses its edge.

If you were more local to me I'd offer you a test drive :driving:

Installed mine today.

Sent my Mk3 one back Friday and Mk4 came yesterday (Tuesday) so excellent service from Superchips with text messages to keep me informed

Installation went as per Mals guide above with me needing to upload my unti to Superchips so they could send the new map for my car but this was instant. As soon as I uploaded I got a text saying the new map was ready and that was that. The Superchips system works perfectly. The only thing is it took ages to upload the map from the car to the handset before I could connect to the pc something like 10-15 minutes so be prepared.

Installation onto the car was fast without all the ignition on/off like there is with the Mk3. From startup the car sounds and behaves normally and even when you are pottering around it feels like the original map. Out on the road is where you notice the increased power. 2nd already pulled very well but BF enhances this and pick up in the higher gears from 1500rpm is a lot better with sharper throttle response. It's not a dramatic change. In normal driving you will notice the better throttle response etc but it will feel pretty standard but overtake something in 4th and upwards and you are past in a zip. What is so much better in this car even with the standard map is 5th gear. The shove is superb and the trick is not to hang onto 4th for too long but get into 5th asap. You really have to watch the dial because you can be doing silly speeds in no time and have to back off to save your licence.

So is it worth the money? For me it is because I got a huge discount by trading in the old Bluefin and you know you can hold your own against most things on the road but if you are looking to pay full retail price the standard cars performance is already very good and unless you really feel you need the extra maybe give it some thought unless you have the cash going spare. Personally I am pleased. It doesn't suddenly turn it into a screaming hot rod. Instead it increases performance where it matters most-in the mid range. As for mpg it's too early to tell but the instant readout was better.

(When I first got this car I was a bit disappointed with the performance but I think this was down to it being a new car with a stiffer pedal and the power delivery is quite different from the Mk3. Now I have got used to it the standard car is an excellent performer with lots of lovely shove in 2nd and 5th is a very rapid gear plus 6th is far more flexible on the motorway than it was in my Mk3. After living with the car for a month I am a lot happier with the standard cars performance)

It's generic. You upload your original map to the handset for safe storage in case you need to restore it later.

As there are not many other mods for the Mk4 unlike the Mk3 the generic map if fine for most cases and certainly feels great.

If you get your DPF and cat removed then you need a custom map.
