Personally I'd prefer a saloon. I had a V6 Ghia X MK3 and that was a fantastic car.
Still think the saloon felt more rigid and a bit quieter than the hatch. But in terms of practicality the hatch wins hands down.
If a man speaks in an forest and there isn't a woman there to hear him, is he still wrong?
My wife isn't speaking to me as I didn't open car door for her. Can't understand it, as I only opened my door and swam to the surface!!

I have the saloon and love it. In 4 months of owning my car I have never seen another panther black ST saloon, they are rather rare!!! You can still get loads in the boot if needs be. But on a serious note, you don't buy an ST for putting loads of stuff in the boot do you, it's a performance saloon not a removal van!

I don't buy that. Why did Ford make them? You get the best of both worlds, performance and practicality.
Personally I like the look of the saloon but the design is very clever and the hatch and saloon look very similar in profile.
The saloon is bound to be more rigid on the limit but for that one trip to B&Q where you need the larger boot opening you can't beat the hatch.....or the estate.
Otherwise you would have bought a 2 seater with the engine at the back eh?

Its not a performance car, its just got a sporty body kit on it!
Its meant to be a comfortable, economical and practical car.
Although the boot is still the same size, the saloon does limit its use a bit, but if you don't need the extra boot height, then you will probably manage.
I often throw my mountain bike in mine, so i need the hatch to make it easier to put the bike in.

the black saloon ur refering to is on autotrader isnt it? i was lookin the other day. if its that 1 it looks nice.
ive got a saloon. u can get a 42" tv in em as long as its a flat screen if its bulky ur buggered to put it nicely. if youve gta a family i couldnt see a saloon being practical. its fine when you go shopping at tesco.
looks wise i didnt really notice a diff when buyin it but when you look at it i think the saloon looks like its got a bigger backend or maybe thats just me.

Performance?? Why?
Its only 155bhp. Its heavy. I don't understand where performance comes into it, or is it because of the ST badge?
Its the flagship model, thats it!
My Dads Peugeot 607 has 170bhp as standard and is much better kitted out, in fact the only option on that car was the colour, every other option was included.
Its twin turbo and leaves the ST behind easily, but its not got a sports kit on it, so its not called a performance saloon... why is that?
Actually, i've worked it out... because ford called a shade of blue 'Performance' blue and made it available to both petrol and diesel versions, so therefore it must be a performance car!
Simple when you think about it.

I purchased my ST TDCi estate for that very reason, its a workhorse that still looks and performs reasonably well.
No way you could ever call a Mondeo ST a performance saloon!

Looks wise Saloon hands down, practicality hatchback wins
But I didn't buy my mondeo based on the boot access, and so far the saloon has coped with ikea, B&Q and helping my sister move house.

Finally someone talking sense! The diesel is not performance, yea it does have torque but so do a lot of diesels, it doesn't do over 150mph as standard and 0-60 in under 7 seconds, the 220 is the performance flagship of the range, the titanium x was the luxury flagship. There is a reason why most of the ST diesels are pb - to make it something it isn't.

If you are never going to load big square objects then it won't be a problem. Think of the Ford Cortina which was sold as company cars in their tens of thousands but they never made a hatchback of it.
But my dad always buys an estate because although for 99% of the time he is carrying around empty air he says there will be that one time that you need to carry something very big and bulky and he won't have to hire a van. Each to their own.

If you can't decide between them just think what you'll put in it and what shape cargo you might transport, if you don't carry anything that would favour one body shape over the other go by cosmetics and if you don't care about that find the best example you can regardless of what it is.
I carry mountain bikes a lot and the hatch is great for that. Seats down the bike goes in complete, take wheels off and you can get 2 full sus bikes in the boot with rear seats in place. These cars swallow large loads.

In my opinion, a car isn't worthy of the 'performance' title if its under 200bhp in standard form.
But i suppose if your only 20-25 then it is probably a lot quicker than the usual 1.1 - 1.6 cars that insurance restricts them to.
As for the 'Performance blue' possy, i wonder how many of you would have specified that colour if it was named 'Gay blue'??
It could be exactly the same shade, but it doesn't sound so cool to include in your signatures, so i suspect it would be avoided..
Just a thought.

It all depends on what your perception is, the St TDCI is I would say a sports saloon, whereas the ST220 is a performance saloon.
The thing I always laugh at is the poof performance blue lot go on about how special the colour is, when every other one is the same colour! TBH it's the saem with silver ones, everyone thinks your an unmarked police car!

So let me get this right, people are buying their STs in perf blue cause of the name of the colour?! I'm sorry but what planet would you need to be from to do that. Is the colour being fairly nice (IMO) and one that sets your car apart as an ST not more likely to be something to do with the choice? Just a thought. Maybe I'm mad and everyone buys their car on the strength of the colour name - if this is so I can see 'get laid quick red' appearing on colour charts in show rooms shortly.
I bought mine in machine silver cause the garage where I bought the car had a used car in machine silver. I bought a hatch as the garage I bought the car from had a hatch. And it's not just used cars, dad has a Tonic blue Mondeo cause they were in stock and mums Fiesta is Vitro cause the car had a grand off. Maybe lots of people have P/B as Ford painted lots that colour and when people bought them new they decided they'd rather have a PB one next week instead of waiting a month for one in grey... And before anyone says this is crap, 2 family memebers have PB STs for this very reason.

I have panther black as everyone has performance blue. I love the blue colour but unwanted something a little different and very unique, hence why I got the very rare cour of black.there were literally hundreds of blue ones out there which i could have bough but I held out for the exact one I wanted. Loads of people think im unmarked police in this car aswell. Everyone just pulls out of the way, another bonus!!!

I specifically looked for a PB one as I love the colour, not because it is called Performance Blue. I phones up garages asking for a PB ST TDCi estate. One said I have a silver hatch 220 if that is ok. If I wasn't doing the mileage I do, I would have a PB 220 estate.
That said I do like the torque on the TDCi and think that for me it is the best of both worlds. Economy and a little poke.
